Why Do 90% of Tourists Get Ripped Off at Bangkok Massage Shops?
It's been about 3 years since I moved to Thailand, and honestly I'm still learning new things. Every time my buddies visit from back home, first question is always the same — "dude where do I get a massage?"
And every single time, they end up at some random shop near Sukhumvit, pay way too much, and the experience is just... meh. I made the same mistakes when I first got here. Took me a while to figure out what actually works.
Here's what nobody tells you
The best spots aren't the ones with flashy neon signs or girls standing outside yelling at you. Those places know tourists will walk in anyway. The good ones? Usually hidden in some random soi, no English sign, packed with locals.
Price range is all over the place too. I've paid 300 baht and had an amazing experience. I've also paid 2000+ baht and walked out disappointed. Money doesn't equal quality here.
Types you'll find
Thai Traditional — The classic one. They'll stretch you, walk on your back, crack things you didn't know could crack. Hurts so good. Perfect after a long flight. 300-500 baht is reasonable.
Oil Massage — More chill, less painful. Good if you're not ready for the intense stuff yet.
The other stuff — Look, Bangkok has... options. Sukhumvit Soi 24, Huai Khwang area, you know what I mean. Not gonna pretend that's not part of the scene here.
How I find places now
Google Maps reviews? Mostly useless. Half are fake, half are 3 years old.
What actually works for me:
Asking expat friends (still the best way honestly)
Walking around during daytime to scope places out
Checking sites that actually keep info updated
For Bangkok I usually check Thailand Nightlife — Bangkok Guide — they got rankings by category and actual prices listed. Saves me from walking into tourist traps.
They also have guides for Pattaya and Chiang Mai which are solid if you're heading outside Bangkok.
Red flags I've learned the hard way
Price on the board different from what they quote you? Walk out.
Staff acting weird or super pushy? Nope.
Way cheaper than everywhere else in a tourist area? It's a scam.
Won't show you menu? Definitely a scam.
Areas worth checking
Sukhumvit — Tourist central but convenient. You'll pay more but options are endless.
Huai Khwang — Where I go now. More local vibe, better prices, Korean and Japanese tourists know about this area.
Phrom Phong — Nicer area, higher prices, more professional.
Quick tips
Shower before you go (seriously, it's just respectful)
Tip 50-100 baht for good service
Don't be shy to ask for more/less pressure
Book ahead for evening times, especially Friday Saturday
Took me like 6 months to figure all this out. Hopefully saves you some time lol
